Local Missions

Missions are central to the church’s calling—sending and serving both locally and globally to share the gospel, meet practical needs, and demonstrate Christ’s love. Through mission work, we live out Jesus’ command to love our neighbors, support vulnerable communities, and partner in transformational ministry.

Assistance is available from the Helping Hands Ministry Team:

Tuesday & Thursday mornings

Helping Hands

The Ministry that Gives Hope in a Stressful World

The Helping Hands Ministry Team is charged with administering emergency funds here at First Methodist Church. It is entirely financed by donations.

Funds (up to a certain amount) are used to provide families in Polk County with emergency assistance, such as help with utility bills (electric, home telephone, water, propane for homes). Please be ready to provide a copy of the bill and your Driver's License for assistance.

We do not assist with rent or deposits.

To help support this ministry, please make a donation to First Methodist Church, "Helping Hands" Ministry.

For more information, you may contact: Helping Hands at the church office, 936-327-7100.

Corrigan Christian Resource Center

The Bible is not the basis of missions; missions is the basis of the Bible.

—Ralph Winter, U.S. Center for World Mission

Corrigan Christian Resource Center serves as a food pantry for the northern part of Polk County. The center also provides emergency help for those needing to pay utility bills or to replace items like clothing and bedding, in case of an emergency, such as that of a home that has been destroyed by fire.

This center was started with the help of the late Rev. Judy Anderson, who was a member of FMC before she went into the ministry.

MannaFest

Improving the quality of life in
Polk County

MannaFest is a multi-faceted ministry dedicated to improving the quality of life for disadvantaged and emergency-need families in Polk County.

Its food pantry provides monthly boxes to supplement assistance from the local Food Stamp Program, and a summer food program supplies extra boxes for children during June–August when school is out.

Additional services include delivering small potted plants to residents of Livingston Senior Center housing before Easter, packing school supplies in backpacks for poverty-level students (pre-K through 12th grade) each August, and preparing and delivering Thanksgiving dinners to shut-ins. FMC members partner with volunteers from other churches to staff MannaFest, and Faith-Promise dollars help support its work. To learn more or volunteer, contact Marilyn Wise at 936-327-9555 or mannafest@livingston.net.

Center of Hope

Changing our community through Christ

Helping residents of Polk County break the cycle of hunger, poverty, and hopelessness through prayer, education, and assistance.

Our mission is to provide emergency food and other necessities to the needy of Polk County. We also offer education and training on how to write a resume and prepare for job hunting, nutrition information, family management, information on drug abuse, and, most importantly, how the power of prayer and faith will help them achieve their goals and succeed. In short, the Center of Hope offers a hand up, not just a hand out, and that means hope.

Disaster Relief Fund

The congregation of the Livingston FMC contributes to a disaster relief fund by giving money, sending volunteers to areas in need, and collecting items, such as flood buckets. In addition, volunteers from FMC go on work trips to the Texas Gulf Coast areas hit hard by hurricanes to help with damage repair.
